About Our Review of “From Blood and Ash” on The Book Brontosaurus
“I loved it the first time I read it and after convincing Kayla to finally read it, I was really excited to dive back in the first book again. I felt like I was able to catch interesting tidbits about the story in my second read of the book.“ – Alex
“While I have enjoyed a couple of Jennifer’s other books in the past, Alex had to convince me to read this one. It’s not that I wasn’t interested in it but I was in a reading slump. This book pulled me out of it and I’m looking forward to the rest of the series.” – Kayla

Chosen from birth to usher in a new era, Poppy’s life has never been her own. The life of the Maiden is solitary. Never to be touched, never to be looked upon, never to be spoken to, never to experience pleasure. Waiting for the day of her Ascension, she would rather be with the guards, fighting back the evil that took her family, than preparing to be found worthy by the gods. But the choice has never been hers.
The entire kingdom’s future rests on Poppy’s shoulders, something she’s not even quite sure she wants for herself. Because a Maiden has a heart. And a soul, and longing. And when Hawke, a golden-eyed guard honor bound to ensure her Ascension, enters her life, destiny and duty become tangled with desire and need. He incites her anger, makes her question everything she believes in, and tempts her with the forbidden.
Forsaken by the gods and feared by mortals, a fallen kingdom is rising once more, determined to take back what they believe is theirs through violence and vengeance. And as the shadow of those cursed draws closer, the line between what is forbidden and what is right becomes blurred. Poppy is not only on the verge of losing her heart and being found unworthy by the gods, but also her life when every blood-soaked thread that holds her world together begins to unravel.”

I remember the day Jennifer dropped the news that she was releasing a new book, back in the beginnings of quarantine. Usually, I follow all book-related news when it comes to her and this one came as a surprise. I purchased “From Blood and Ash” the day it came out and the story took me on a wild ride and I couldn’t put it down until I was finished with it.
This was Jennifer’s first fantasy book and I think she did a phenomenal job. I can’t get enough of Poppy and Hawke. She created a world that I am eagerly waiting to learn more about. There is so much history involved with the Ascended and the Atlantians that I can’t wait to see where it goes. Jennifer has also been teasing a prequel series that will be pre-ordered as soon as a link is available.
I really enjoyed this debut fantasy from Jennifer L. Armentrout. It got me out of a book slump and I was really invested early on. “From Blood and Ash” is well-written and sucks you in from the beginning, pun very much intended. The characters were a ton of fun and the plot was really engaging. I certainly didn’t want to put this down.
I’m very much looking forward to the sequel, which Alex has already read. I was to read it next so we can discuss our thoughts on how the series might continue in the next installment, which should be out in April.
We both really enjoyed this book and had a hard time putting it down once we started. While it was Jennifer L. Armentrout’s first fantasy, it’s a great addition to her published works. We’re both very excited to see what she has in store for the rest of the series.
The second book is already out, and the third installment will be published in April 2021. You best believe that we will be reading every book she writes involving this world.
